Job Boards »
In the digital technology market, there are a TON of people looking for remote, virtual, online, and telecommuting jobs. Unfortunately for many modern job seekers, most job boards are devoted to traditional, in-office roles.
Introducing … (drum roll, please!) …. Flexjobs!!!! Flexjobs is THE place to find both part-time and full-time flexible work. If you want to work from home, there’s no better place to start your search.
We’ve been following Flexjobs for quite a while, and seriously, it’s awesome. Our clients and followers love it because unlike “freelancer only” sites (like Fiverr and UpWork), Flexjobs is filled with W-2, work-from-home type opportunities.
If you’re in the Tech or IT space, you’ve probably heard of Dice. Dice isn’t the biggest job board out there, but it’s very modern, and very niche—which is one of the main reasons we like it so much.
Dice is focused on employers and employees working in the Technology space. Their job listings are simple and well laid out. Plus, (this is cool, even if you’re NOT in the tech space) they have a really great app built into their system to help you find out your worth on the market in dollars and cents.
If you’re looking for a new job, the Dice Job Board is well worth checking out.
Indeed is probably the most known job board, and they are also one of the best. They're a big player, and they have a TON of jobs on the site.
If you’re just exploring your options, Indeed is a great place to spend your time.
We especially love Indeed because their system is just so darn simple and easy to use. No fluff, no confusion—just job openings, and an easy way to apply.
Indeed can help you navigate the job market, no matter what type of job you are looking for. Check it out!
First impressions matter. A LOT. Our close friend Michael Cavotta offers a unique Premium Photo Branding service—a service that can help you make the RIGHT first impression. He takes headshot photos to the next level.
The coolest part? … His services can be made 100% virtual.
Yup! … You can get Michael’s premium photography services anywhere in the country. If you choose this service, rest assured that you won’t get just any ol’ professional shot … He makes sure you’ve got a modern photo that represents who you really are.
Michael is an award-winning photographer, a graphic design master, and a game-changing personal branding coach. He's a genuine agent of authenticity who thrives on bringing people face-to-face with their exceptional selves … He’s a guy you’ll definitely want to meet.
If you’re looking for the BEST, most AUTHENTIC photo for your social profile, website, or business page, you should definitely check out Michael Cavotta’s premium, virtual PhotoBranding services.
On the quality side of things, Look Better Online can’t really compete with Michael Cavotta’s service (above), but … we realize with tight budgets and short timeframes often required, he’s not the best fit for everyone.
If you’re not ready for a premium service, but want something better than that awkwardly cropped selfie, Look Better Online is exactly what you need.
Look Better Online offers a compilation of inexpensive professional photographers. You can sort photographers based on work samples, testimonials, bios and location. It’s not the same as PhotoBranding, but it’s a good second choice.
“B-b-bbut … I don’t want to use a professional photography service!”
Okay, if you’re still not convinced to go “pro” on the photo, OR, if you’re just a die-hard do-it-yourself-er, then we’ve still got a solution that you need to check out.
Photo Feeler is a really cool online app that lets you share multiple photos on a safe, private platform. When you input your selected photos, other Photo Feeler users will provide you input on 9 specific traits, giving you unbiased feedback and hard data about how you're coming across in each photo.
Hard data is the key, here … We love the fact that with Photo Feeler, you don’t just get 1 or 2 opinions, but instead get a lot of statistical feedback on what kind of impression your photo is making.
Plus, Photo Feeler users can also leave notes with their impressions about how you’re coming across and insight on improving your digital impression. The app compiles information into an easy summary so you can choose the right photo for you.
Job Search Tools »
We can't tell you how often we hear about how difficult it is to keep track of job applications. When we first found out about Jibber Jobber, a program that helps job seekers keep track of each job application … Well, we knew it was going to go big.
We've done some digging around, and we can’t find anyone else who offers a tool like theirs. Jibber Jobber helps you to keep track of what jobs you’ve applied for, who your contacts are, and what you have emailed or called them about already.
If you’re tired of using an antiquated excel spreadsheet to track your job applications, (or worse, if you’ve got all your notes up in your head) … It’s time to give Jibber Jobber a look.
I guess it's not technically a “job search app,” but it’s close enough. We get sooooo many people asking us how to create a cool email signature line (like ours), so we figured we should add this one to the list.
WiseStamp is an awesome tool that makes it easy to create great email signatures.
Our clients and readers love WiseStamp because it’s so simple to use, and because it’s an easy way to make an instant impression on employers and recruiters. We highly recommend that instead of a boring ol’ signature line, you use WiseStamp to inject a little of your unique personality.
Resume Resources »
One of the biggest complaints we hear is that posting resumes online is a boring, time consuming process. We get it! … and that’s why we love Resume Rabbit. In about 5 minutes, Resume Rabbit will distribute your resume to 85+ top US job sites, all at once.
Resume Rabbit takes the backbreaking labor out of getting your name out there on job boards. No, it’s not going to be a “cure all,” but it’s a great first step for job seekers after creating an amazing resume.
One quick note: When your resume goes out all over the web, some “spam” is inevitable.
So … if you do use Resume Rabbit, it might be good to use a separate email and phone number (like a google voice), so you can easily filter out the stuff you’re not interested in, and shut down the inflow of messages once you accept a new role.
We’ve all heard of the dreaded “ATS” systems … You know: those darn computers that do a bunch of keyword analysis on your resume, and then determine your fate by deciding whether or not your resume makes it into the hands of a real person!
JobScan can help you beat the computers by optimizing your resume for your target job descriptions. It’s a pretty cool tool, and it’s free for 1 month!
We don’t want to give the wrong impression here. JobScan is not a magic wand, and it’s not the whole story of what makes a good resume … but if you’re going it on your own, it’s one of the tools we recommend.
We’ve used JobScan (along with some other tools) when completing resume keyword optimization for our clients … It definitely helps.
There are a lot of big, corporate resume writing companies out there, and Top Resume is one of the biggest. We call these large resume companies "resume mills."
To be honest, we’re not a huge fan of any of them, because with hundreds of freshly trained, entry-level writers, quality control is near impossible.
However, we’re also realistic. We understand that our prices are a little higher than these companies, and with a limited budget, we know that working with us doesn't make sense for everyone … THAT is why we’ve put Top Resume (technically a competitor) on this list.
Top Resume offers a Free Resume Review, so you can "try before you buy." They do decent work (a lot better than what most people can do on their own), but just be aware that because they are a "resume mill," it's partially luck of the draw on what writer you get assigned.
If you’re looking for a cheap, entry level-fix, give Top Resume’s Free Review a try. Or, skip them, save up your pennies and work with one of the BEST 🙂
LinkedIn Tools »
Of all the tools on this list, Rapportive is probably the one we use most often.
Rapportive is a FREE add-on for Chrome and Firefox that syncs up with LinkedIn’s backend and shows you everything you’d want to know about your contacts … ALL right inside your inbox.
With every email you send or receive, Rapportive uses LinkedIn to show you who you’re talking to, their picture, their job title, and your mutual connections.
It’s an amazing way to establish rapport and grow your network. You can see all the highlights of your LinkedIn profile and even send connection requests, all without leaving your email system!
This is also the solution for you if you’re one of those people who wants to put a name with a face. Plus, if you use Gmail, Rapportive replaces Gmail's annoying sidebar ads with valuable info about the person you are emailing.
It’s well worth the 30 seconds to add Rapportive to your browser.
Email Hunter is a HUGE help when you’re trying to reach out to hiring managers, HR Reps, recruiters etc., but you’re stuck because their address isn’t listed anywhere online.
Email Hunter can help you find the email address of a contact in just a few seconds, using just the web domain of the company your target contact works for.
There are three core facets to the Email Hunter app. First, they have a domain search, which helps you find the most common email pattern, like firstname.lastname@example.org. Second, they have an email finder that uses the domain pattern to predict your target contact’s actual email. Finally, their email verifier will help you verify the validity and deliverability of any email address.
Email Hunter could be that missing link between you and a job you love.
Website Builders »
There are a TON of personal website builders out there. We’ve scoured long lists and dug into the backends of countless sites, trying to learn which ones would be best for our clients.
For the needs of most job seekers, we put Strikingly at the very very top of our recommendation list.
Strikingly claims to be the “easiest editor possible” … and frankly, we think that’s a fair claim. This is truly a website builder that allows you to create a beautiful personal branding website without any code or design skills.
Oh yeah, and did we mention they have a “forever free” option?
Sure, their paid options add some really cool features, but they’re not always necessary. If you’re working on building a personal website, you can’t go wrong with Strikingly.
Though it’s technically our second choice, Workfolio is an extremely close second. In fact, it’s such a close second that the line gets blurry …
There are countless reasons that Workfolio is a great choice for your personal site. Their templates are beautiful, the editor is insanely simple and easy to use, and they offer seamless integration of a personal domain and email.
The ONLY reason that we don’t put Workfolio at the top of our list is that they only offer 7 days for free. If you’re planning on creating a site on your own domain, (which we certainly recommend) you’ll probably want a paid plan eventually …
If you’re looking for an amazing personal website builder, you should definitely give Workfolio a try.
Looking for something else?
If you’re looking for a specific type of tool or resource, and you don’t see anything like it here on our site, feel free to schedule a free call with us. We’ll do our very best to help you find what you’re looking for … We’re pretty connected in the career and personal branding space, so chances are we’ll be able to direct you to exactly what you need. Even if we don’t know off-hand, we would love the opportunity to help you find what you’re looking for … We’re here to help!
"Before working with you, I had submitted 28 applications, none of which resulted in an interview... After working with you, I got interviews for the very next two jobs I applied for. I was offered the role for $15k more than I make now."
"I contacted Will after losing my job. He was amazing. He listened to my crazy story and got right to work pulling out aspects of education administration that transfer to the corporate world.
After I sent out my new resume, I immediately got 4 interviews, one of which was an offer that I ended up taking. It's the best job I've ever had in my career. My employer told that I wouldn't have gotten a second glance had it not been for my resume, and I owe that all to Will's expertise."
